egyptian president mohamed morsi as a dictator and accusing him of a power grab. cnn's reza sayah is in cairo. reza, what's it look like now? >> reporter: joe, it is 11:00 p.m. cairo time. these demonstrators started gathering around in tahrir square about 1:00 p.m. local time. that means they've been going strong for about ten hours. many thought maybe egyptians were worn out, tired of demonstrating after the 2011 revolution, but if you look at tahrir square today, if you look at cairo today, it doesn't seem like it. the demonstrations are continuing. so are clashes. about an hour and a half ago clashes taking place right where we are behind us at the hotel we're staying at. security forces clashing with protesters. a number of protesters ambushed a police vehicle carrying riot police. the police took off. the protesters got ahold of this truck, set it on fire. more security forces came in, shot tear gas and disbursed the protesters. we've seen similar clashes throughout the day. all the demonstrators angry after president morsi declared some controversial decrees that temporaril

and other top congressional leaders weren't told sooner. a time line cnn has put together shows the republican house majority leader may have known about former cia director david petraeus' extramarital affair before the president did. that's according to aides to congressman eric cantor who tell us he found out from an fbi employee concerned that national security might have been breached as a result of the affair. cantor was told on october 27th. president obama didn't find out about the affair until after election day. congressional leaders from both parties are upset that neither they nor the president were informed until late last week. >> obviously this was a matter involving a potential compromise of security. and the president should have been told about it at the earliest date. >> reporter: a u.s. official said there was no breach of security as a result of the affair. a cantor aide says the congressman called the fbi's leadership to report the information he got on october 31st. but according to "the wall street journal," the fbi's probe had already been under way for

said, the timeline of the scandal, who got notified and when, is now under the microscope. cnn intelligence correspondent suzanne kelly has more on that. >> reporter: according to a friend of petraeus, the affair began in november last year, two months after the retired general took the helm at the cia. that same friend also reports that meetings between the two were infrequent, but at some point, petraeus and broadwell began communicating via personal e-mail accounts. e-mails that a government official describes as explicit. skip ahead to may of this year. that's about the time a government official says broadwell began sending threatening e-mails to jill kelley, described as a family friend of petraeus, who lives in tampa, warning her to stay away. that official tells us that kelley shared her concerns over the threatening nature of the e-mails with a friend of the fbi, and that prompted an investigation. sometime after petraeus became aware of the e-mails, a government official says petraeus told broadwell to stop sending them. and sometime around july, according to the frie

, victor, a u.s. official tells cnn the fbi was investigating a tip that david petraeus was involved in an extramarital affair with paula broadwell. she is his biographer. broadwell spent a year with petraeus in afghanistan interviewing him for the book she co-wrote about him. it's not clear whether broadwell is the woman with whom petraeus has admitted to having this affair that led to this resignation. the official says that the fbi counterintelligence unit investigated the tip to see if there was a potential security risk, whether petraeus could possibly be blackmailed. the official tells cnn there was no suggestion the fbi was investigating petraeus for any possible wrongdoing, but the concern, rather, was that he might be putting himself in a vulnerable position. >> we know that a lot of the questions from online that i've read, some of the comments on cnn.com, there's questions about the timing. let's start with what it comes after, the presidential election. what if we found out about that connection, if any, and why this comes just days after the election? >> reporter: well,

. have a great weekend. >>> it's the top of the hour. you're in the cnn newsroom. i'm susan hendricks in today for fredricka whitfield. we have new information on the david petraeus resignation. the highly dedicated army colonel quit after announcing he had an extramarital affair. it's an fbi affair that's sounding alarms. the fbi was investigating some suspicious e-mails and found some e-mails between paula broadwell and david petraeus. broadwell is the woman who wrote his biography. the fbi looks to see whether his communications had been compromised, and they said they had not been. now, petraeus was interviewed by the fbi, but it's not clear if broadwell has been questioned and if she will be. a u.s. official said petraeus was never a target of an investigation and that a tip about an affair led to that probe. now, general petraeus was scheduled to testify next week about the attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. now what happens now that he's gone? suzanne kelly is in washington with that part of this big story. >> susan, as washington reels from the announcement not only that d

perhaps not yet. i want to bring in cnn pentagon correspondent barbara starr. barbara, adultery can be a crime in the military but it is not in the cia. it can, however, be a risky, risky endeavor. are there any indications at this point that our national security was threatened in the petraeus case? >> well, ashleigh, so far there is no indication of that but the facts have not come out in public. earlier today retired general james "spider "marks who broadwell once worked for and knows petraeus addressed this very question. >> there's absolutely almost zero percent chance that national security was compromised or was at risk. now, clearly, based on an initial investigation, there might have been classified documents that were found on her laptop. again, that might be more procedural than it is a large risk. so that needs to be looked into and that needs to be put aside so you can end that discussion and frankly you can let dave petraeus and paula go on with their lives because frankly the cia is going to be okay. >> look, by all accounts, broadwell, a reservist in the military, al

to allen tells cnn of kelly there is no affair, she's a bored socialite. a u.s. official says there appears to be nothing criminal involved. but allen is now under investigation for what is called inappropriately flirtatious e-mails to kelly. >> secretary directed it be referred to inspector general of department of defense. >> the fbi found up to 35,000 pages of documents, some dating back two years during the investigation. according to a senior official close to allen, one message the afghan commander sent warned kelly she had been threatened. the official says allen had received an anonymous message, now believed to be from broadwell. the pentagon was called in because allen is subject to military law. but why did this only come out now in public view? >> we have a large amount of alleged material that went between these individuals, as much as 30,000 pages. it's not clear whether this was viewed as a relatively minor question or whether it was not apparent until the very end that the general was involved. >> allen was to appear thursday for senate hearing to become the military head of

"cnn newsroom" continues now with ted rowlands. >> thank you, suzanne. i'm ted rowlands in for brooke baldwin. the developments are pouring in regarding the investigations of a former spy chief and current general, happening very soon, some of the lawmakers furious over not being told about the investigation of david petraeus are getting ready to meet. that's this afternoon. a senior official is telling cnn details about general john allen's relationship with a socialite at the center of both investigations. this is a web of characters and connections that is impacting the team in charge of america's security. it is also delaying when the world will know who will be the next leader of nato. general john allen was to have a confirmation hearing this thursday on his way to becoming the supreme allied commander. that, of course, is now on hold while allen denied doing anything wrong, he is under investigation for potentially inappropriate e-mails he sent to this woman, jill kelley, the tampa socialite triggered the petraeus investigation. we'll get to exactly

confirms to cnn that petraeus told broadwell to stop sending harassing e-mails to kelley. who is kelley? along with her husband, she's known petraeus and his family for more than five years. that couple met the four star general when he was stationed at medil air force base in tampa. now, what about the e-mails? what's in them? here's what we can tell you tonight. a description of the e-mails seems to validate what a friend of petraeus tells us, that petraeus felt broadwell had shown a possessiveness toward him. as to whether she gained any information during her relationship to petraeus, here's something we found. here's what we found, a speech she gave in october of 006, while she was under investigation for those harassing e-mails that seems to add fuel to the fire. >> the cia an ex-had actually taken a couple libyan militia members prisoner, and they think the attack on the consulate was an attempt to get these prisoners back. that's still being vetted. >> still being vetted. and knowing about those prisoners being there in the first place, wasn't something you heard about on the ne
